Husband and wife Mark and Kolene Spicher operate Spicher and Company out of Pennsylvania in the United States, where Kolene paints all the original artwork. She showcases her original artwork on the island of Nantucket, off the coast of Cape Cod. My partner Emma Bortignon and I came across Spicher and Company while preparing to attend the New York International Gift Fair in August this year. As soon as we saw the product range, we thought it had a very unique look and feel, something that wasn't available in the Australian market. After meeting the Spicher team and seeing the collections firsthand, it confirmed our belief that it would be very successful here in Australia. How would you describe the artworks? The Spicher and Company brand is best described as vibrant, striking and fun. Kolene has a distinct style and flair with her paintings that is instantly recognisable and she takes a playful approach to her subject matter. In fact, Kolene's works have decorated most of the top US retail stores and featured on TV shows such as The Sopranos. They have also been bought by several international celebrities. Spicher and Company artwork is printed on coated acid-free art paper and uses a 12 colour ink process. A more traditional method uses only four, but 12 ink colours allow for a much wider and vibrant array of colours. Each print is paired to a wooden frame that best suits the size and style of the subject and is housed behind glass. What kind of customers enjoy Spicher products? Our customer is anyone looking for a timeless piece of art. The offering is so vast that it's hard to pinpoint a particular type of consumer. Many of our pieces are purchased as gifts, particularly our word signs, as they're an affordable statement piece that can be customised for something truly unique. Our larger images are often used to style homes and commercial fitouts, such as our 2.6 metre-wide, 12-section vintage map of the world. What are the most popular products in the range? We have hundreds of images available, but our LOVE and hot air balloon ranges are among the favourites. Our maps and science- based images are also popular. With most of the ranges, there are three to six images that make up a story. Our clients often buy the whole story and replicate the way it was merchandised on our trade fair stand. We have a popular offering of word signs of destinations like New York and Paris and phrases such as 'Welcome To The Zoo'. We also have directional signs like 'To The Beach', featuring an arrow. What kind of stores stock your products? With something to offer most businesses, we have a wide range of stockists, from the boutique in a small country town, through to high-end lifestyle stores and national retailers. Many designers and decorators love our unique collections, often commenting tongue-in-cheek they will take one of everything. I can't think of any one type of business which hasn't wanted a Spicher piece! ••• Stylish and timeless. Flamingo RRP $249, Penny Farthing RRP $249, Bees RRP $219, LOVE RRP $249.
